Steamboat Springs — Slopeside Grill is for sale, and Jim Cook expects it to be in new hands before ski season starts. The restaurant is in Torian Plum Plaza along the slopes of Steamboat Ski Area. Chris Corna owned the restaurant. When Corna died in May, Slopeside went to his parents, the beneficiaries of his estate. Cook, of Colorado Group Realty, is handling the sale. Neither Richard nor Barbara Corna could be reached for comment Tuesday afternoon. Cook said he could not reveal financial information or speculate on the price the restaurant would bring. Restaurant managers referred all questions to Cook, who said he’d received interest in the restaurant from people in the area and out of state. Cook said he expected to sell Slopeside quickly. In the interim, the employees are handling Slopeside. “It’s fortunate Chris left a very dedicated staff of people that are helping run the business,” Cook said. “It’s still going to take ownership, hands-on ownership, and it’s a very good business because Chris left a legacy of creative marketing and good leadership. That’s what somebody’s going to have to try to replace.” Cook said he didn’t know how Corna’s parents would choose a new owner. “That’s not up to me to decide,” he said. “It’s a financial decision, and that’s how the current owners are probably going to make the decision.” Cook said he couldn’t predict the effects of a change in ownership at Slopeside. “Someone would be foolish to try to change the concept, but everyone’s business philosophies are a little different, and that remains to be seen,” he said. Corna, 45, died May 18 in Port Chester, N.Y. He was driving a rented car that crossed the centerline on U.S. Highway 1 and crashed into the foundation of a railroad bridge. The Westchester County, N.Y., Medical Examiner’s Office ruled the death a suicide. A memorial to Corna at the base area has been proposed. |
