Located a few blocks from downtown Craig at the corner of Green and Seventh streets, Sunset Elementary School sits in the heart of the community. Constructed in 1955, the School had building additions in 1960 and 1978. Sunset had an enrollment of 309 students in the 2007-08 school year. Sunset then had 40 staff members, including 16 full-time teachers and four part-time teachers. Student-teacher ratios for grades one through four range from about 14.3 to 19.1 to 1. The school's Academic Performance was rated as Average in the Colorado School Accountability Report for the 2007-08 school year. Teachers at the school have an average of 16 year's experience. Sunset, which serves students in kindergarten through the fourth grade, features an auditorium, gymnasium, library, computer center and music room. The staff at Sunset Elementary School concentrates on reading and writing skills along with mathematics. In addition to the core curriculum, Sunset offers speech therapy, special education and counseling to students at its School. The current principal is Zachary Allen, who has been principal at the school since 2004. There is an active volunteer program that helps students progress in School activities.
